When members of the famous Club finally head for the twenty new bedrooms we built, they rise up this completely new staircase, designed to be 'stylistically invisible'. Experience has taught that such an approach depends less on being modest and deferential to the original design, and more on developing the same levels of confidence and emotional energy as the original architect. In this case, that was Charles Barry, best known for designing the Houses of Parliment. The hand-blocked wallpaper, 'Jasmine Dot', was designed in 1830.
